Some drone presentations leave its audience speechless. Other times the presentations provide mind-blowing new features and give a positive outlook to the future of technology. Sometimes however, it doesn’t go according to plan.
A Russian drone made headlines this week for its rather memorable video appearance.
In the East Siberian city of Ulan-Ude, a postal drone gathered the public’s attention for its maiden voyage. The presentation of the company Rudron/Expeditor 3M for the drone was a simple, tried and tested one.
Like other carrier drones in the past, the company behind the drone to deliver a package from point A to point B. This will prove to the spectators that the drone is of quality production. It also offers a unique delivery system to interested clients. Mostly, it’s there to show off a $20,000 flying device that can replace mailmen and delivery trucks for the area. Maybe.
The presentation started with the drone shown off into the crowd. It had the name of the brand emblazoned in huge markings. On the other side was a drawing depicting a majestic logo of the area. The drone’s paint job was black and blue, as if an ironic foretelling of what is to come.
It started to take flight from a launch pad with no problems. The idea was for it to soar into the sky like a majestic bird in flight. But reality had other intentions. In front of a watching crowd, it soared straight into the air a few feet. That was about the end of it as it immediately flew into the wall of a nearby building. The end result of the $20,000 drone being mere scrap metal after the collision. It shattered into multiple pieces (to the sounds of people groaning and swearing) and that was it for this little postal drone.
One of the presumed causes of this catastrophic display may be the many WIFI connections in the area. Or maybe it just wasn’t prepared for areas with tall buildings and should have started in smaller towns. Maybe it was just an unfortunate incident caused by the wind. I guess we will never know as the company behind the drone swiftly distanced themselves after the incident.
