Here’s a first. In the city of New Delhi a drone with a robot arm and a giant claw saved a puppy stuck in a drain. Who says drones are only there for taking pictures and recording videos? Drones can directly save lives too!
Finally, some wholesome and lighthearted news in today’s world where drones are often associated with planes crashing.
Puppy Rescue Drone:
The owner of the puppy-rescue drone, Milind Raj, noticed a puppy stuck in a drain at a street. Residents nearby mentioned hearing animal whimpering for a couple of days before the drone interfered. The drain where the puppy was in was not the comfiest of places. Dirt and garbage were everywhere and it was obvious the puppy would not survive for long. Apart from the environmental hazards endangering the dog, it also made rescue complicated. The area was deep and a person who climbs down may get injured. Climbing down the drain manually may not be the best approach. Not to mention the streets above are always busy, so one cannot simply close the road to rescue the dog.
That’s why the drone entered the scene. Raj himself is familiar with Artificial Intelligence and Robotics, so the process was simple enough. He attached a robotic arm to his drone, complete with a claw, and went to work. His background in robotics helped make the robotic arm. His AI background on the other hand created a sensor to track the puppy’s heartbeat and breathing. The purpose of the sensors are to check if the grip of the robot arm is too tight. If it is, the puppy would feel threatened and start to panic. The operator can then make the adjustments to make sure the puppy gets out, while still being calm and uninjured.
At the end of the day the puppy escaped from the drain. You can also rest easy as Raj himself adopted the dog and is now living a happy life. Isn’t that just wholesome?
