Skydio 2: the Next Generation Selfie Drone

By James Bernard · On October 1, 2019

The company Skydio has made some remarkable self-flying drones in the past. Their newest creation, the Skydio 2, may set the bar higher than ever.

Their previous creation, the Skydio R1, is a very good selfie drone with autonomous flying capabilities. This makes it a perfect companion if you want to capture footage outdoors without micromanaging the controls. All this while still getting the results on the recording end. Its follow and autopilot functions are great, and you can be sure that you do not miss a single second of your adventure.

Skydio 2 Review

The Skydio 2 is another excellently built drone coming from the success of the R1. It is a serious choice for those that love roughing it out in the wilds. The camera system of the Skydio 2 can take breathtaking shots of you while never missing any second of the action.

Its main camera is a 4k resolution beast – however, that is not the only camera aboard the Skydio 2. It hosts six additional cameras – all for navigational purposes. This gives it eyes in all directions and makes it capable of dodging obstacles mid-flight.

Designs and Upgrades

Skydio 2’s design has a slight change in the usual quadcopter design. While still housing four different rotors, the two at the front are under. This makes it an aberration compared to the usual top-heavy rotor design.

Summing up, the Skydio 2 has a ton of upgrades from the R1.

  • Better camera, providing you with improved video and still shots
  • Improved autopilot modes
  • Enhanced in most aspects (speed, collision avoidance, reaction time, range)
  • Cheaper, with a price tag of $1000 (compared to R1’s $2500)

All in all, the Skydio 2 offers a ton of improvements from its previous siblings. The main selling point of the drone is the price. It over half the difference from the R1, it can be a great deal for those with a higher-end budget.
